What does the sitemap analyzer check?
It fetches your sitemap (following index sitemaps), counts URLs, measures lastmod coverage and staleness, finds duplicates, flags http URLs and mixed hostnames, checks size limits, and samples a few URLs to verify they return healthy status codes.
Why does lastmod matter?
Search engines use lastmod to decide what to recrawl first. Accurate dates get your updated pages re-indexed faster; missing or fake dates waste your crawl budget. Google has said it uses lastmod when it is consistently accurate.
What are the sitemap size limits?
A single sitemap file may contain at most 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 50MB uncompressed. Bigger sites should split sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file.
My sitemap URL returns an error here but works in my browser. Why?
Some servers block automated requests or require cookies. The analyzer also refuses to fetch private or internal hosts for security reasons. If your sitemap sits behind a firewall or bot protection, test it from Google Search Console instead.
